[ He sends her the address of a restaurant in DC called Fiola. It's not the most expensive restaurant but it's clearly on the upper end of quality. It wouldn't be hard for him to get a reservation given his position at State and he ignores the fact that it's a little out of his budget.
[she knows the restaurant well. the salary of a curator, even the louvre's, is not terribly high, but diana has had a long time to set her financials in order, and to establish her taste of food scenes in major cities.]
It had been a while since Blake had asked a woman out. He wasn't sure if this was a date or merely a dinner and maybe he should have been clear about what he wanted but now it felt too awkward to message her again and clarify. He supposed that one way or another he would find out when they met at the restaurant. The time and day had been clarified and on the appointed day he had made sure the Secretary knew that he had plans for the evening -- which is a rare event and so pending an catastrophic diplomatic emergency he was free to leave at 5PM.
It gave him plenty of time to go home and freshen up. He worse his best suit, a red tie and his hair was meticulously styled. He fed his cat and then ordered an uber to take him to Fiola. According to plan, he arrived 15 minutes early and checked on the reservation but then remained in the lobby area to wait for Diana so he could greet her when she arrives. It felt less awkward than waiting at the table.
Diana, for her part, has not accepted an invitation out since... well, she can't actually remember the last time she went out for pleasure rather than business. Upper class social scenes are not foreign to her--curators have to have a lot of connections to secure collections for their museums, and she is no exception. But to be seen in public like this without the excuse of work is a little out of her comfort zone. And not much makes her uncomfortable anymore. But she likes Blake, knows she will enjoy having dinner with him. That is enough to convince her this is a good idea.
She chooses her outfit carefully: a red dress with a plunging neckline and a low back. Modest enough for the occasion, but proper attire for this caliber of restaurant. Everything is planned and executed perfectly, and when she exits the taxi and tips the driver, her discomfort is nearly gone. Diana holds her clutch close, heels clicking on the concrete as she makes her way into the restaurant. The ambiance is to her taste, and she smiles when she sees him in the lobby, casting an approving eye over his suit and tie. "You look very stately." A slight tease, considering his position in the government, but she means it earnestly.
There was the moment when Diana walked in and he caught sight of her that it actually does take his breath away and makes his mouth go a bit dry and he feels like he's in High School again wanting to ask Patty the head cheerleader to the Prom but knowing there's no way that he'd ever have a chance with her. Then he remembers that Diana has already agreed to dinner with him and he smiles at her comment, laughing. It only sounds a tad nervous which is definitely a win for him.
"Thank you. You look..." Blake pauses because there are quite a few choices to make there and each one has pros and cons in his head. "You look stunning," he finally said. "Our table is ready for us as well," he adds before he can add more compliments on top of the first and make it awkward.
She hears the slight hitch in his laugh, and doesn't know whether to bask in it or sympathize. She's been a part of the modern world long enough to know how to dress in her best interest, and perhaps she shouldn't have done so for Blake. But she wants him to like the way she looks, a feeling she doesn't often have. So she inclines her head slightly at his compliment, smiling. "Thank you." She glances towards the dining area, and nods. "Lead the way, then." And without waiting, she loops her arm confidently with his.
Rest assured that Diana could have showed up in a burlap bag and while Blake might have questioned the fashion choice he still would have found her breathtakingly beautiful. He smiles as he leads her the table is in a good location in the restaurant, one of the best tables that provides a good view but also is more private than some of the others.
When they arrive at the table he moves to pull the chair out for her.
Nodding approvingly at the choice in table, she smooths the front of her dress before taking a seat. Of course Blake is a gentleman. What else could she have expected? He didn't get his job by being a cad.
"You have good taste." The compliment comes easily; though practiced many times, she actually means it for him. "This is lovely." It isn't long before the waiter joins them, asking if they want wine. She looks to him, waiting to see what he'll choose.
"Thank you," Blake couldn't help but grin. There are times when he is easily flattered and he rather likes being complimented about his tastes in things whether it be restaurants, clothes or what have you. It's a matter of pride.
Blake glances at Diana when the waiter asks about wine. He thinks to order the most expensive one before he poses a question instead.
Diana doesn't try to hide that she's pleased he's asked her opinion. She offers another glance at the menu before looking back to him. "Any sauvignon blanc," she supplies. Luckily for him, none of those are terribly expensive.
Blake smiles at her decision and then he's ordering one that he's sure will be good. It's not all that pricey either which is a relief to his wallet but he doesn't think about it all that long. "You have impeccable taste in wine choice as expected."
"Do you have a favorite?" Blake asks curiously. He's sampled plenty, though surely not as much as Diana has. He's been lucky enough, especially since working at State to by being the assistant to Elizabeth get such perks as wine at fancy events and even a few times as gifts.
His parents were well-to-do which hadn't hurt his early access to wines either.
After a moment of thought, she shakes her head. "I honestly don't know if I could choose." That's only partially true--she'll always love the wines of Themyscira the most, but it isn't as if she can tell him that. Not right now, anyway.
It isn't that she doesn't want to answer--it's that she doesn't feel as if she can yet. She likes Blake, he's a good person, but Diana simply doesn't think he's ready for this information yet. "Really? Pretentious people usually give the best wine as gifts. What was the year?"
