modern au again

It's late, later than Lan Xichen would usually be out, and yet here he is in the middle of a party. He suspects this is not the kind of environment that any of his current social circle would expect him to be at - but he has, actually, seen worse. The party is almost pleasant, aside from the number of people who seemed to take his empty hands as an excuse to try to get him to drink.

But he'd solved that by carrying around a glass of soda, and now he's even somewhat enjoying himself. He hadn't intended to come here - normally it's not the sort of thing that he's invited to, despite the fact that his almost brother-in-law is the host. But tonight is something of a celebration for Wei Wuxian, apparently, and he had been invited. Wangji hadn't been able to go, and he knows being there to support Wei Wuxian is important to him, so he'd gone in his stead.

Wei Wuxian had seemed pleased to see him, at least, though he knows he wishes Wangji was here. He'd asked after Huaisang and gotten a noncommittal response - which, unfortunately, he couldn't press too hard on, since he is still respecting Huaisang's desire to keep whatever this is growing between them quiet from their social circle.

If he's honest with himself, he'd come in part because he was hoping to see him, but, well. He's still enjoying himself anyway - though now he's looking for a little bit of a break, a place away from the main thrum of the party.

He finds it outside - most of the outdoor seating is taken, but there is one open by a young woman, and he heads over.

"Excuse me," he says politely. "Do you mind if I sit?"
