Wei Wuxian is lounging on a low tree branch. One leg dangling over the side while the other is bent at the knee with the foot on top it. His head is resting against the trunk in a picture of relaxation. It's peaceful and he can hear leaves falling all around him. His eyes shut as he contemplates taking a short nap before continuing on with his day. The foot that dangles swings back and forth, toe of his shoe dragging along the blades of grass. The weather is getting cooler but it is always just a touch colder in Gusu then anywhere else anyway. It's hardly something he notices anymore.
Perhaps he has forgotten the date, or merely doesn't find the importance of being another year older to have any real significance. After all the things he has experienced, a birthday seems like just another day. But at least this day seems to be a good one as far as weather is concerned. He could easily spend it all right here in this tree. He knows there is probably other things he should be doing but for now he is content.
If he hears the quiet rustle of robes through leaves, he doesn't make any sort of indication. Instead he just pretends that he is asleep as he lets the breeze blow the long pieces of his hair gently against his face.
Wei Wuxian is bundled up head to toe. It is just a bit colder then he would like and the fact that he doesn't have the added benefit of a golden core to keep him warm makes it just a little bit harder to endure. So he is dressed in layers, a cloak with a nice warm fur hood keeping his head covered. He rubs gloved hands together as he stands besides a frozen lake.
He should have stayed inside where it was warm but he couldn't help himself. Despite the cold the view was beautiful. The snow covering the ground and the water frozen over makes a pleasant sight. It's hard not to enjoy the sparkle of the snow as the sun hits it. And at least there is that little bit of help against the cold. The sun exists to keep him from completely freezing into that spot.
Granted most of the time, WuXian went with WangJi just about everywhere he went. It was more fun that way, after all, and besides, they were married. It only made sense. But every once in a while, he wasn't able to for one reason or another. It was rare that it happened, but tonight had been one of those rare times that he hadn't accompanied WangJi on the night hunt.
He had accepted it easily when WangJi left, but afterwards he waited not so patiently for his husband to return. Even if it was only for a few hours, he always missed WangJi when he was gone. He never thought that it would be forever, inwardly at least, but that still didn't stop him from sitting by the window and waiting for him.
As he saw WangJi finally returning, he smiled, turning to look at the door. When his husband finally opened the door, he smiled. "Lan Zhan, welcome home."
"This is ridiculous! How could there still be an arranged marriage? I think it's a ploy. Look at you, you're the fifth spirit, Elsa. What is going to happen to the Enchanted Forest when you leave? You can't just leave. As Queen, I should be able to stop this."
Elsa tries very hard to calm down her sister as they approach Lotus Pier. They had chosen wisely to leave Olaf and Sven at home - a concern for Sven's health in slightly warmer climes and a concern of how the people of Yunmeng would react to a walking, sentient snowman. Once Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff had approached the waters that led them to Lotus Pier, the fifth element in question used her powers to change their clothes to fit in a little bit better with the residents.
Apparently, it had been arranged by their parents with hopes that either it would be forgotten or Elsa got a control of her powers by the time she was older. But then the letter appeared one day, officially speaking of the arrangement by Iduna and Agnarr and the clan leaders Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan.
The doors open and Elsa steps forward with Anna and Kristoff behind her, ready to approach another new turn to her life. Perhaps she would be able to explain to her groom that...well, things have changed since the agreement had been made. And perhaps powers weren't as willingly accepted in this place.
"Anna, it's going to be all right," she says quietly, squeezing her sister's hand.
One of the few ways she'd found to escape Prince Jin's control was to agree to a marriage to a strong sect's leader. By the point it was even offered, she was disheartened and angry with how her power and skills and disciples had been used, abused, and destroyed in one way or another.
So yes. She was using the marriage. Just as, she expected, her new husband is using her to silence his advisors that he needed to marry and start having children. That was fine. And he wasn't an evil man, from what she has learned even before the ceremony. It's only been cemented and confirmed since that day.
But now she can breathe. Lotus Pier is a beautiful place. Much like her own beloved Four Seasons. She's already begun to divide her day time between exploring her new home, and helping instruct any who wished to learn from her - male or female, though it seemed more of the latter dared approach her than the former.
So she could often be found out walking in the early evening hours, especially - waking too early was relegated to necessity.
[ They'd been friends for a while, when Zizhen's dad came up with the bright idea of how to secure higher status for the Ouyang Sect. The same thing had been tried a generation before, by the Yunmeng Jiang. Which had resulted in the young man who was to be the new Lanling Jin sect leader-- and, if Zizhen's dad got his way, Zizhen's new husband-to-be.
They make the trip from Baling to Lanling during a discussion conference to present the idea to the adults who are watching over Jin Ling now that Jin Guangyao is gone. Jiang Cheng is, of course, present for negotiations as well, as this concerns him too.
While the adults are behind closed doors, making decisions that affect more than just them, but Jin Ling and Ouyang Zizhen's whole futures, the pair in question wait in a nearby courtyard. Zizhen paces nervously, not sure what outcome she wants to arrive from the adults within. Sure, Jin Ling is attractive, and powerful, and rich. But he's her friend. Surely he doesn't want to wed her! He can't possibly think of her that way... Can he? ]
You know, [ she says, as she pauses in her pacing and turns to face her friend, ] We don't have to do this. Even if they agree on it, we can... We can defy their wishes. Break the engagement off.
They had been courting for a long time now. Jin Ling had been hiding a secret from Sizhui for even longer and it is coming to haunt him. There's only so many times you can rebuff your lover, distract them with your hand and your mouth and keep theirs pressed away from the part of you that isn't what they'll be expecting. It's exhausting and the growing fear of being caught before he's honest...
Maybe he should break things off. That would be fairer right? He knows Sizhui's preferences, what he likes and he shouldn't have let it go on this long -- but Jin Ling didn't want to lose him.
It's more than just some casual thing between friends even if he hasn't said the words even to himself.
"Sizhui, stop," Jin Ling breathes out heavily as the other presses him back against the floor, feeling the weight of the other over him and their hips so close but Jin Ling is focused on keeping them from pressing too close together no matter how his core aches for the contact.
Jin Ling hums lightly in response to the compliment. He’s getting hard in his pants, it’s impossible not to when he’s around Sizhui — when the other is touching him, kissing him, it’s like he catches fire. His hands move down to push at his pants after that ghost of a touch.
He wants more. Everytime he thinks maybe they should hold back a little but he never can.
“You’re so hot. And you make me hot,” he breaths, drawing him in for another deep kiss.
It's been a few months since the decision. The decision that Lan Jingyi still isn't okay with and can't understand. He's been miserable, doing even worse in his studies, sleeping more and quieter than was anywhere near normal for him. But one evening close to 9 he makes his way to the Hanshi and knocks.
Sometimes he thinks about how Sizhui tells him he could just leave, that they can't force him to stay but he didn't want to betray his clan that way. He didn't want to feel all the resentment he felt either and he didn't know how to resolve it.
So even if Zewu Jun is the cause of his problems he doesn't know who else could help him either if only he can not lose his temper about the decision again. The last time he'd tried to talk to Xichen it was more confrontation and yelling than anything else. As always hidden on him is Jiang Cheng's pendant that he'd asked for when he snuck in the night before Jiang Cheng left.
To say that Lan Xichen was surprised at Wen Ruohan's choice would be an understatement, but at the same time - not false. On the other hand, among the leaders of the four Great Sects, the two bachelors are him and Mingjue, and Mingjue-xiong would never agree to it.
Still...
Xichen was sure that there were many more threads behind the choice.
All the same. The ceremony was now past, the three bows to the Heaven and Earth, the Ancestors, and each other completed. Xichen was carrying a pouch with a mix of the hair of both of them.
Once they were in the privacy of the Hanshi, Xichen reached to remove the red veil from his, ah. Bride. And smiled, slightly.
"In case it needs to be said, I will not touch you or demand any - physical intimacy of you unless by some chance you wish. Or until such a time as you need it.
"I assume, by this arrangement, that you have already had at least one heat. Is there anything about it that I should know?"
Reasonable and direct. He could talk circles around his husband. He considered it mean and unnecessary.
Song Lan struggles day to day in a world without his soulmate in it -- at least not truly in it. He keeps what's left of him on him at every moment. Each day he mediates and somedays it feels almost as if Xingchen is there beside him -- truly, as if he can hear his breath once more. He wants to whisper his name but he can't speak but he can see that the space beside him is still empty.
One day, he doesn't look. One day he lets himself believe Xingchen is alive beside him. He can hear his breath, sense the slightest of movements that would indicate that Xingchen has become restless with meditation and is ready for the next part of the day.
Song Lan keeps his eyes closed, thinking the words he can't say.
A few more minutes.
If he stops meditating then Xingchen will be gone.
[ ....I couldn't decide between arranged marriage or they stumble across each other in heat/rut so I just went with kind of both! Let me know if you need any changes? ]
There'd been talk of an arranged marriage, before war broke out. The Jiang and the Jin were tied together by their first born children, the Nie and the Lan sect leaders were practically sworn brothers, and it would take a fool not to see the bond that the Jiang head disciple and the second young master of Lan had already begun forming. The Wen were the odd ones out, and back when Wen Ruohan was considering more subtle methods of seizing control, negotiations for a marriage between one of the Wen clan and the Lan sect leader had started.
It could not be either of Wen Ruohan's sons, he insisted, when both were Alphas and had the potential to succeed him as sect leader. No one had enough to substantiate the rumors that at least one of his sons was not an Alpha, and so back and forth occurred as others were considered before Wen Zhuliu was settled upon. Not a natural born Wen, which left some of the elders disgruntled, but certainly far too formidable an ally to turn down.
He had even met Wen Zhuliu, a few times, and enjoyed his company well enough. The betrothal seemed almost certain, and Lan Xichen was not opposed.
But somewhere along the line, Wen Ruohan apparently decided a show of force was the better course of action. There is a not insignificant part of Lan Xichen that wonders, as he runs from Cloud Recesses with little more than his sword, flute, and as many of their books and scrolls as he'd had time to take with him - were the marriage negotiations only an attempt to get someone into the Lan clan who would have unquestioned access to look for their piece of Yin iron? It would have worked. Lan Xichen had promised Wen Zhuliu himself that if the betrothal took place, they would do this as partners. Equals.
It hardly matters now. The only thing on his mind is getting as far away as he can to regroup, seek allies, and return to support his Sect - and somewhere in there find a quiet place to meditate before his rut hits him.
He's stopped to rest in a secluded wood near a small cave, only for a moment, when he picks up a scent that alerts him to the fact that he is not alone. His grip on Shuoyue's hilt tightens as he moves closer to investigate.
The time for arguments had passed, there is so little time it feels like as the planning for the ceremony begins and Huaisang drags his heels at every juncture. He doesn't want this marriage and he'd been very loud about his objections, arguing with his brother vehemently, taking longer to relent even in the face of his wrath. It had been another confrontation and Huaisang had fled to his room, emotions barely contained and the ache in his chest seemed to radiate through him.
This is not the life he wanted, not the marriage he wanted. There were so many things already that he didn't have a choice about. He didn't have a choice about one-day becoming Sect leader, now he could not even control who he chooses to marry-- if he chooses to marry. He is feeling absolutely sorry for himself as he drops down onto a cushion and stares dejectedly at what he had been working on earlier and suddenly he hates it a bit.
He wonders if maybe Zonghui would come, if he would check on him after the way he had left. Maybe he should just call for him.
[Cheng buys a set of spider/crab-like hair clips and sets them artfully on the footboard of the bed as a gift to Huaisang. He then settles out in the living room to read while he waits for her to come home. ]
