It had taken a long time for his plan to come to fruition but he'd brought Wei Wuxian back for Lan Wangji and he had gotten revenge for his brother's murder. With Wei Wuxian back, Huaisang had known what he would lose and he'd been willing because throughout all the years Lan Wangji's heart had never really let go of Wuxian. Huaisang told himself that this isn't the sort of letting go that Wangji had made him promise not to do. This is different.

And honestly, the only reason they had gotten together was because they were both mourning. Huaisang had never meant to fall in love with Wangji.

Huaisang could be selfish but when it came to Wangji's happiness he'd choose it over himself over making Wangji make the choice himself.

Once everything is settled, Huaisang is making to part quickly and quietly to no fanfare, no announcement to Lan Wangji or Wei Wuxian.

It's true that they'd gotten together over their shared grief. Just as it's true he hadn't intended for Nie Huaisang to come to mean so very much to him. Wangji knows it's love, too. Not the same level as Wei Ying, but...not much different, either. They've carved something for themselves, and he doesn't want to let it go.

Even with his soulmate returned. Especially with all that's come to light about Huaisang's hands being in every little part of that resurrection. It sends a warmth through him and he notices when Huaisang moves to slip away without a word. That...

Oh. It sends a flicker of pain through him to realize Huaisang believes he'll just be discarded.

He doesn't say a word to Wei Ying, doesn't explain, just grabs for his wrist before tugging him along as he goes after Huaisang.

Being brought back from the dead did not boast well with one's body. There were far too many aches and pains. It also didn't help that he hadn't wanted to be brought back. The other half of his soul should have been able to move on, manage a happy life. Somehow. That was not, unfortunately, what happened.

"Lan Zha..."

Except that he notices the very thing that the other does. Huaisang slipping away, or attempting to, like a shadow in the night. The fact that Lan Zhan wanted to go after someone who had been his best friend throws him off. Even more so when there's no preamble to his wrist being grabbed and him dragged along.

"Aiya! You two need to stand still or something."

Or still enough that he's not being tugged around everywhere.

Huaisang had hurried up at first when he noticed the two of them behind him but there would be no outrunning Wangji certainly if he had his mind made up. He steels himself a bit before stopping, fan in hand, tapping on his palm and then spreading open and waving it with a benign smile.

For once, he can't think of something clever -- or even stupid to say. He'd already noticed Lan Wangji's hand on Wei Wuxian's wrist. Why was he coming after him?

Huaisang didn't need clarification to know that it is over for them. There had always been an expiration on the time he had been allowed to be with Wangji once he'd figured out his plot.

"Don't make this harder, Wangji," Huaisang says quietly, his voice thicker than he wants it to be and the pretenses of formality shed for a moment even if they're not completely alone.
