Jiang Cheng had been blacklisted by enough matchmakers that he imagined that he wouldn't get a chance to find any kind of arrangement; it wasn't vital, considering he could adopt a child into the family to have an heir, but it was still sad. It was still lonely. That's why he had been almost content to accept the arranged marriage, to let himself fall into the trap of believing that he might have something good.
Lan Jingyi hadn't been a terrible match; he already knew the man from his friendship with a-Ling and things were easier to manage knowing it was arranged rather than something they had planned beforehand. Jin Ling had been confused at first, not happy, but he had realised the merit in it - an official alliance between Lan and Jiang, since Wei Wuxian was not part of the Jiang Clan any longer. It would be better.
The two of them are learning how to be in each other's space - Jingyi had settled into the clan well and seemed more than happy to take their mantra on board. He can understand: when he had returned from his training in Cloud Recesses he had felt a kind of relief to shrug off the hundreds of rules and simply be a Jiang again.
They're comfortable now, settled close together, and almost without thinking Jiang Cheng reaches down with a free hand to stroke his fingers through Jingyi's hair; it's soft and tender, something like a smile tugging at his lips as he picks up another paper.
Jingyi smiles at the subtle show of affection, the other's fingers in his hair. Such things had taken time to happen for them to get comfortable and safe in each other's space. Now, Jingyi hardly thought twice about invading Jiang Cheng's personal bubble -- unless the man was already angry and then he was either the source with an argument or was steering clear until it cooled. His eyes glance upward at Jiang Cheng and he grins reaching to poke at the other's mouth.
"Careful, someone might think you can be happy," Jingyi teases him and then shifts his head ever so slightly before looking back at the stack he's working on.
Jiang Cheng's lips twitch where he's touched, but he does nothing else.
There are few people in the Jiang Clan that would take such liberties with him, but as his husband he imagines that Jingyi thinks himself above such ruling. He pushes and nudges at the edge of Jiang Cheng's patience and he allows it more and more, a blossoming affection in his chest that makes him breathe out gently.
It's almost too dangerous.
"I doubt that," he says, voice low, but he shakes his head and reaches for another document. "But as long as you are quiet I will allow it."
Jingyi laughs at the answer and he concentrates a little more on the work that he's doing.
"I'll be quiet," he promises.
And he is quiet, making quite a bit of progress before he starts to get tired. He's almost done when the papers fall on his chest slowly as he nods off, head still on Jiang Cheng's thigh.
But Jiang Cheng is well versed in doing work with a number of distractions around him - he had grown up with Wei Wuxian, after all - so not even his spouse would be enough to tear him away completely. It's only when he's on almost the last document that he looks down again and pauses, something soft on his face.
Hesitant, he reaches out and lets his fingers trace over Jingyi's face.
Jingyi stirs slightly at the light touch, making a quiet sound. His hand goes up blindly investigating what it is but he hadn't even bothered to open his eyes.
"Mm?" he vaguely is starting to remember where he was and that the pillow he was using is his husband's thigh.
"Ah. You're awake." It's not like he meant to wake his husband up, but he is coming to the end of his work and he will be needing to move soon. Frowning, he looks at the papers before he drops it to one side.
He's worked enough for today and there will only be more of the same tomorrow.
Jingyi yawns as he looks at Jiang Cheng and then he looks papers he had been holding when he fell asleep. Well, great help he was... At least he hadn't drooled on them, though, right?!
There's still work he could do and he could stay up later to do it, but there's no way for him to deny the fact that he would enjoy slinking off to bed a little early to indulge in some time with his spouse. Who could blame him, when he works hard enough as it is?
"I'll finish these tomorrow," Jingyi promises as he shifts so he can set the stack back down, rubbing at one of his eyes and shaking his head a little.
"Good," Jiang Cheng is hardly the kind of person to tell another that work could wait, especially when there would be more of it tomorrow. Stretching a little, he breathes out before he turns to look at his spouse.
"Not everyone gets to nap while others work, a-Yi."
"Ah, the benefits of being the wife of a sect leader," Jingyi jokes, and if anyone else had called him a wife he would have gotten defensive but it amuses him to call himself that honestly.
"I'll make it up for you tomorrow though. I promise!"
"Why would you want to do that to me?" Jingyi complains lightly at the idea but he reaches to take the other's hand so he can get up, a stretch coming with it and a stifled yawn as he gives the other a bit of a sheepish smile in the aftermath.
"To teach you a lesson. Obviously." Jiang Cheng snorts a laugh, but he does allow Jingyi the moment. His eyebrows raise before he lets himself turn away to hide his humour.
"Tch," Jingyi rolls his eyes and he stretches a little more once he's standing before pressing in closer to his husband, cheek resting against his upper arm.
Jingyi enjoys being allowed such a luxury with the other and not being shrugged off or scoffed at. If anyone had been around that surely would have been the case but luckily they were alone. He doesn't pull away from the other and just curls his hand around Jiang Cheng fully intending to walk to their chambers latched onto him this way.

"Mhm, better than any pillow."

Slowly, he pushes himself to his feet and stretches his arms out before he offers a hand down to Jingyi.
"Come on."

"Don't say it."

Humming softly, he looks down at Jingyi fondly.
"Let's go."
